The Toyota Wigo has been one of the Japanese brand’s top sellers in the last decade. Since its launch, the small hatchback has been striking a chord with plenty of Filipinos looking for an affordable and economical hatchback that is spacious and practical while delivering a cost-effective ownership experience.
With that, however, we have to look at the current generation Toyota and admit that it is getting long in the tooth. The model that we currently have has been sitting on the same platform for close to a decade now with no major updates made aside from a few tech upgrades and up to three different facelifts.
Even the top-spec trim is still labeled with a TRD badge, which is no longer in line with the rest of Toyota’s GR Sport variants, as is the case with the Vios, Corolla Cross, and even the Hilux.
As such, we’ve been waiting a long time for an update on the Daihatsu-Toyota vehicle for quite some time now, and sources indicate that 2023 is the year that we will finally see Toyota launching the new model.

Indonesian motoring website, Otodriver, has reported that the next-gen Toyota Wigo is expected to debut this year. The publication pins the launch date as early as March 2023, which is about two months from now.
As for what to expect, the new model will ride on the DNGA platform, otherwise known as the Daihatsu New Global Architecture chassis. It’s the same base platform that the Toyota Avanza, Raize, and all-new Vios will be based on, albeit shorter to fit the Wigo’s segment.

The engine of the new Wigo, however, might be a carryover from the current generation. The 1.0-liter naturally-aspirated mill will still be a mainstay and a reliable workhorse of an engine for the model, but it’s not totally impossible to want or expect the Raize’s 1.2-liter to make an appearance this time around. If Toyota were so inclined, perhaps the 1.0-liter turbo from the Raize could make for a very interesting pairing with the small hatchback.
We’re expecting the new Wigo to first appear in Indonesia. Since that’s a bit of a stone’s throw away from the Philippines, we’re eager to see how soon our country will be able to get the model on showroom floors. Still, however, there is a bit of speculation with this new model for the time being, and as the month of March draws closer, expect more details to surface.
