The Corolla Cross is a great and versatile vehicle. It provides good ground clearance, space, and fuel efficiency. The hybrid variant takes it a notch higher with better styling and even better fuel economy. However, North America will get a hybrid variant in the form of a higher-performance XSE Hybrid variant which is significantly more powerful than the hybrid Corolla Cross locally.
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine powers the Corolla Cross XSE Hybrid along with three electric motors for a combined 196 hp and 290 Nm of torque and is paired with a standard AWD (All-wheel drive) system in which the two electric motors power the front, and one electric motor powers the rear. In comparison, our local Corolla Cross hybrid is propelled by a 1.8-liter engine that makes 120 hp and 270 Nm of torque that powers the front wheels only. That’s a massive 76-hp difference. That difference also translates to quicker acceleration times, with the XSE hybrid sprinting from 0 to 100 kph in just eight seconds. That is way quicker than the 11-second time of the local hybrid variant.

Even with the extra weight and power, we can still expect exceptional fuel efficiency because of its hybrid setup and above all, an even more dynamic and fun drive.

It doesn’t just stop with the drivetrain. The exterior of the XSE Corolla Cross hybrid also gets a redesigned front bumper with a larger lower grill to offset the omission of the upper portion of the front fascia. Along with that, it also gets redesigned wheels and a two-tone paint job as an option.
Overall, this XSE hybrid variant gives the Corolla Cross a much-needed injection of power and fun that still retains fuel efficiency and versatility that attracts buyers. However, we don’t expect this model to be released locally as it looks to be a North American market-exclusive variant. However, maybe if there is enough demand, we hope that Toyota Motor Philippines could probably pull some strings.
