Ever since the Perodua Axia launched in Malaysia, we’ve been eager to see what the Toyota-badged version would be like. Toyota Indonesia sensed the anticipation and officially unveiled the next-generation Toyota Wigo for the Indonesian market, and there are a lot of good things to report.
The Toyota Wigo currently sold here in the Philippines is getting on a bit, in fact, it has been nine years since the Wigo was first launched in Southeast Asia. Toyota has given the Wigo several updates over the years in order to keep it in the ring for the competitive mini-hatchback market. However, slightly bigger models with bigger space and bigger engines have recently cropped up in the market for almost the same price as the Wigo. So, Toyota responded by changing some things for its next iteration.

The 2023 Toyota Wigo, codenamed D74A got an extensive redesign from Toyota and is now built on the Daihatsu New Global Architecture (DNGA) platform. This platform is also used by the Raize, Avanza, Veloz, and the next-gen Vios sedan. Through the use of the DNGA platform, Toyota says that the all-new Wigo is longer and wider than the model it’s replacing. The dimensions of the new hatchback come in at 3,760mm long, 1,665mm wide, and 1,505mm tall, on a wheelbase that is 2,525mm. Doing the math, that’s 100mm longer, 65mm wider, with the same height, on a wheelbase that is longer by 70mm.

For the exterior and interior, the 2023 Wigo is not just a simple rebadging job, Toyota set the Wigo apart from the Perodua Axia by giving it a unique front-end. For starters, the Wigo has larger headlights, a striking and larger grille, and wider fenders. As for the rear, the Wigo shares the same look as the Perodua, sharing the same door trim, taillights, rear quarter panel, and tailgate.
Toyota will also be releasing a GR version of the Wigo. Though it doesn’t come with extra power, it does get a more prominent front spoiler and gloss black highlights. Toyota will also let you know it’s GR variant from the GR badges in an assortment of places. A two-tone color option is available for this variant so look out for that as well.

Inside the all-new Wigo, it’s evident that this new model is a step up from the current model. The cabin features elements from the Raize, from its digital instrument cluster to the floating touchscreen display. The interior design also features more sharp angles and pronounced lines, which gives it a high-quality feel.
Under the hood, the Indonesian market spec of the all-new Wigo will likely use a 1.0-liter engine that can put out 67hp and 91Nm of torque. Toyota is also doing away with the relatively antiquated four-speed automatic and replacing it with a continuously variable transmission.
We’ll also see a new engine fielded by Toyota in the next-generation model. The Raize’s 1.2-liter naturally-aspirated three-cylinder WA-VE motor makes its debut for the first time in the Wigo family of models. With the new engine in the mix, the Wigo will get a considerable boost of power (no turbo here, unfortunately) with 88 hp and 112 Nm of torque. Toyota has also upgraded the transmission and replaced the aging four-speed torque converter with a D-CVT.
Sources point out that there is a possibility that the new 1.2-liter engine will probably come as a cost-effective option for the new Wigo, as its platform mate in Malaysia, the Perodua Axia, still retains the 1.0-liter three-cylinder motor. Because of that, we’re still hoping that Toyota Motor Philippines ends up bringing in the 1.2-liter exclusively, or in tandem with the 1.0-liter.
If you’re excited for the new Wigo to launch here in the Philippines we advise you to not hold your breath. Since the next-generation Wigo has just launched in Indonesia, it will take some time before local dealerships get hold of of these. There is hope however that the all-new Wigo will be here sooner than we might expect given that it is one of Toyota’s best-selling vehicles here in the Philippines.
