After a number of internal teasers, nods, and winks, Mitsubishi is finally out with the brand-new 2023 Xpander Cross. A long-awaited model ever since the launch of the standard facelifted Xpander, the taller and bigger brother of the seven-seat MPV is finally here and is priced between P1,328,000 and P1,353,000 depending on which color you want to bring home.
The good news about this model is that it is at the tip-top of the pecking order in terms of Xpander specifications. It will get even more tech and features than the standard Xpander in its top-level trim which is fitting given the premium that Mitsubishi charges over the regular model.
With that being said, however, the Xpander Cross is a more rugged and upgraded version of the Japanese brand’s venerable seven-seater in the Philippines. While yesteryear’s Xpander Cross did seem like just an Xpander with extra body panels, this time there are a few more things that sweeten the purchase if you’re on the hunt for a capable MPV/Crossover.
While most of the car is still based on the same platform, chassis, and powertrain as the regular Xpander sporting a 1.5-liter inline-four with 103 hp and 141 Nm of torque mated to a four-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels, we see that Mitsubishi has made a few improvements to the model to make it an overall better-looking vehicle. The added body panels are now more integrated compared to the prior model, and of course, we get all the new trimmings that can be found on the current-generation Xpander, updated LED headlights, fog lamps, taillights, a revamped fascia, and grille, plus a bunch of other improvements that are exclusive to the Cross model like roof rails and faux skid plates all around. We also get new wheels that are exclusive to the Cross model that comes in at 17 inches in diameter.
There is only one variant available, but this will serve as the Xpander to end all Xpanders, in other words, the ultimate Xpander. First off, we get a new leather-wrapped steering wheel that’s complete with steering wheel controls for cruise control, music control, and also gauge cluster control. The head unit is a 7-inch touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and it outputs its audio through a six-speaker system. On top of that, Mitsubishi also took the gorgeous TFT-LCD gauge cluster from the Montero Sport’s top trim and shoehorned it into the Xpander’s cabin, adding a new level of premium for the Xpander family of models.
Following that, Mitsubishi Philippines have loaded this new model with a whole host of tech and safety features for driving which includes driver and front passenger airbags, up to seven three-point seatbelts, active stability control with traction control, hill-start assist, ISOFIX anchor points, tether anchors, active yaw control, and even a reverse camera. Active yaw control is new for the 2023 year model, which is derived from Mitsubishi’s motorsports technologies. This system will help improve the handling of the car, especially in low-traction situations and when the Xpander is turning at speed. Other than that, you also get standard convenience features like keyless entry with push start and stop, synthetic leather all throughout the cabin, and Type A and Type C USB ports for middle-row passengers with a 12-volt socket for the front and third rows.
As for the price of the new Xpander Cross, there are three depending on the color that you want. The most affordable Xpander Cross is priced at P1,328,000 and that variant comes in Monotone Blade Silver or Graphite Gray. The middle-priced option is the Two-Tone Sunrise Orange Colorway, which sits at a price of P1,338,000. The priciest option in the lineup is the Two-Tone Quartz White Pearl, which goes for P1,353,000.
