The 2023 Suzuki Ertiga first debuted in Indonesia last year, and Thailand was next to receive the plucky MPV, now, Suzuki Philippines says it’s our turn to have a go. Don’t be fooled by the relatively unchanged looks, under the skin, the entire vehicle has been reworked to become a smart, fuel-efficient MPV of the future. But, is this enough for the Ertiga to lead in the MPV sales race here in the Philippines?
Exterior
Looking from the outside, the Ertiga does not have any radical changes to its body, the overall proportions and outline of the car are the same as the model it replaces. Upon closer inspection, we see that the grille of the new model is refreshed, with square chrome pieces forming a downward trajectory replacing the straight chrome strips its predecessor had, besides that, the front fascia of the Ertiga is much the same as the previous model.
Moving to the rear, chrome strips accentuate the tailgate. The new Ertiga also gets new garnishes on the taillights.
Lastly, an emblem with the word “Hybrid” in blue is emblazoned on the tailgate, emphasizing its identity as a hybrid model.
Interior and Technology
Inside the Ertiga, there are updated touches on parts of the interior. The center console is still home to a 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system with SmartLink connectivity, but, the instrument cluster has been slightly revised. Newer fabric seats are introduced, and as well as some touch-ups on the trim. For the GLX variant the steering wheel gets some extra love with leather wrapping the entire wheel.
Like before, Ertiga models GL and above get rear parking sensors and a convenient push-start button. The infotainment system is complemented by four speakers at all four corners of the car. Lastly, the new Ertiga carries over the rear automatic climate control from the previous model.
Safety
The Ertiga Hybrid is loaded with new safety features. Dual front airbags and ABS with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) come as standard but are now complemented with the addition of hill-hold control and Electronic Stability Program (ESP), keeping the driver in better control of the vehicle.
The new Ertiga’s safety features go all the way to its construction and frame. The new Ertiga’s frame is built around Suzuki’s TECT (Total-Effective Control Technology) and built on top of the HEARTECT platform. This makes the Ertiga’s body light yet rigid, allowing it to effectively absorb impacts in the case of collisions while at the same time improving driving dynamics.
Power
Like its predecessor, the Ertiga Hybrid is powered by a 1.5-liter K15B gasoline engine producing 103 horsepower and 138 nm of torque, giving it brisk acceleration. That is where the similarities end for the Ertiga Hybrid and its past model though. The Ertiga Hybrid’s engine comes equipped with Suzuki’s Integrated Starter Generator (ISG).
The ISG replaces the conventional starter motor and has the added functionality of charging the electric motor and battery while also providing extra power during standing starts and acceleration. Adding to that is the Ertiga Hybrid’s Engine Auto Stop-Start System (EASS), this system shuts the engine off when idle to decrease fuel consumption as well as limit exhaust emissions and engine noise for a quiet ride while at the same lowering fuel consumption.
With this mild-hybrid system, the Ertiga Hybrid achieved 12.54 km/L during city driving, an improvement of 7.6% from the previous Ertiga with just the engine alone.
Pricing
The 2023 Suzuki Ertiga Hybrid will come in three variants: GA MT, GLS AT/MT, and GLX AT. Prices start at P954,000 for the base variant going all the way up to P1,153,000 for the top-spec GLX.
The Ertiga Hybrid will be available in Snow White Pearl, Silky Silver Metallic, and Cool Black Pearl colors for the GA variant. Meanwhile, additional colors of Metallic Magma Gray, Burgundy Red Pearl, and Brave Khaki Pearl are available for the GL/GLX variants.
