It’s no secret that Toyota sees that the future of cars is heading toward hydrogen fuel territory. The Japanese automaker has already done several tests for this futuristic fuel with many test mules in racing. Now, however, the Japanese automaker has revealed its newest hydrogen car concept with the Toyota Corolla Cross H2.
What makes the Corolla Cross H2 concept unique is that it comes with the 1.6-liter turbocharged 3-cylinder engine from the GR Yaris and the GR Corolla. However, instead of running on gasoline, it runs on hydrogen fuel instead. If you follow the automaker in the racing scene, you will know that Toyota has run a hydrogen-powered GR Corolla in the Super Taikyu endurance series. Toyota also did something similar with a hydrogen-fuel GR Yaris H2 in the World Rally Championship.
Toyota has improved the hydrogen engine to the point where it now comes with similar power levels comparable to that of a normal gasoline engine. The range for the fuel is also up by 30 percent and refueling time has been brought down to just a minute and a half which is comparable to you fueling up at a gas station.
In order to make the Corolla Cross run on hydrogen it had to be outfitted with a special fuel tank and a high-pressure hydrogen direction injection system as well amongst other smaller details. All in all the concept is working proof that hydrogen fuel could be the next big thing for the automotive industry as it works in a similar way to conventional gasoline or diesel engines and does not come with the long charging time drawbacks found in electric cars.
The series of H2 concepts that Toyota has been producing lately is part of the brand’s move towards carbon neutrality. It’s a process that the automaker believes won’t be achieved through battery-electric vehicles alone.
